recorded live at my own monthly, down was created out of my own personal desire to have something different to attend, as well as giving other music connoisseurs a new option in things to hear on a thursday night. more of a listening party than a dance party, the monthly has been growing in strength since its inception five months ago, having already featured guests such as insideout and derek plaslaiko, with future guest sets from adultnapper, dj three, and many more coming.

having the option to play music that they love to purchase but never get to play, down has been on dj’s lists of events to perform at since they get to stretch their musical legs and try something different.

this set, recorded live in the mix on 11.20.08, comes in at almost five hours in length. starting at around 116 beats per minute and ending around 120, its a slow, sexy journey through my heart and soul.

Die elegante und hypotherme Tochter der dysfunktionalen Familie ist zurück um ihr neuestes Meisterwerk im Harry Klein zu präsentieren.
CHLOÈ Thevenin mixt nach der berühmt-berüchtigten Compilation mit Ivan Smagghe für Kill The DJ und ihrem fragil-romantischen Debüt-Album „The Waiting Room“ die erste Ausgabe der Live-At-Robert-Johnson-Reihe, die am 19. Januar 2009 erscheint. Die Pariserin steuert ihre musikalische Vision einer perfekten Nacht zu einer streng limitierten, von Saskia Randt und Christin Corell liebevoll gestalteten und äußerst begehrenswerten Sammelbox bei, in der insgesamt 4 CDs Platz finden werden (Prins Thomas, Ivan Smagghe und Liquid folgen).
Gestählt in einer acht Jahre dauernden DJ-Residenz im mythischen Pariser Lesbenclub Le Pulp, etablierte Chloé zusammen mit ihren Mitstreitern Smagghe und Jennifer Cardini einen Sound und eine Haltung, die zwischen Geschlechtsrollen ebenso pendelte, wie sie die Schwere und Düsterkeit von Joy Divison oder Bauhaus mit modernen Technoplatten, beflecktem Electro, elektronischen Mollakkorden und Minimal verband. Die Auseinandersetzung mit den verschiedenen musikalischen Formen zielt darauf, ihren jeweiligen besonderen Charakter, ihre spezielle Wirkung hörbar zu machen. Diese Lust am Hören stellt die Verbindung zwischen den experimentellen Lofi-Tracks und dem hypnotischen Deep Techno her. Herkunftsorte, Cliquenbildung und Genregrenzen (siehe Gender) spielen keine Rolle mehr.
So wird Chloé, die inzwischen schon zu den seit Jahren regelmäßig wiederkehrenden Instanzen des Harry Klein gehört, auch heute Nacht ihren großartigen Sound – Stream Of Consiciousness starten, der vor allem durch die klassische Trias eines DJ-Sets hypnotisiert: Dichte, Steigerung, wundervoller Spannungsbogen. Kaum jemand entwickelt mehr Gefühl für den Moment, den Ort und das passende, musikalische Pendant zur Atmosphäre des Augenblicks.

RA concludes its podcasting year with a mix from Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann.

It wasn’t a tough choice for RA to pick out who to close out 2008’s podcast schedule. We simply asked the man responsible for our favorite mix CD. Marcel Dettmann’s Berghain 02 was a towering techno monument—a celebration of the genre’s past and its possible futures. Dettmann’s career began in his hometown of Fürstenwalde in the mid ’90s, where he organised parties alongside his friends (and now fellow Berghain residents) Marcel Fengler and Norman Nodge. After being headhunted as a resident by the owners of the Ostgut club, he played there for the venue’s final three years until its closure in 2002. When the people behind Ostgut launched the Berghain club two years later, his unique outlook on techno ensured that he was one of the first on the list to be brought back into the fold.

Whilst he releases his material on Ostgut Ton—both solo and in collaboration with fellow Berghainer Ben Klock—the other main outlet for his productions is Dettmann’s own MDR imprint. Dettmann has stated that the purpose of MDR is to facilitate his „quest for the optimal track.“ Stripping away everything extraneous to the music has meant that he has shifted the focus back to making people lose themselves in the moment on the dance floor—surely what techno is all about. On his RA podcast, you can hear that aesthetic loud and clear: Pounding minimalism is the order of the day, whether it be new or old. (There is plenty of both.)

What have you been working on recently?

Recently I’ve been working on several remixes. In addition to that, I just released a new record on MDR produced by Norman Nodge and, of course, I’m doing some new stuff of my own.

How and where was the mix recorded?

I did the mix in my studio with two turntables, two CD players and a sampler.

Can you tell us a little about the mix?

I went into my record case and picked out the stuff that has been catching me the most at the moment. And I’m really happy about the result.

What are you up to next?

In the beginning of January I’ll go on tour in the US. I’m playing in NY, Minneapolis and Boston. Later on, in March, I’ll be traveling to Japan.

Are you any closer on your „quest for the optimal track“?

I think you can’t describe an „optimal track“—it’s a question of definition. I’m searching hard for it everyday.

Do you think the popularity of Berghain and the Ostgut label have affected the atmosphere in the club?

I don’t think so. Berghain, or in former times the Ostgut, has always had a very good mixture of people from all over the world.

How did your birthday party at the club go?

It took really long and we had a great time.

MY LITTLE DISCO!

VERA reist heute mit ihrem sympathischen Freund Dorian Paic aus Frankfurt an. Dort fungiert als verbindende Schaltzentrale einer der besten Plattenläden, das Freebase ganz fabelhaft.

Ab und zu findet man dort den vielbeschäftigten Dorian Paic an der Kasse, der zudem als A&R des Labels Raummusik verantwortlich zeigt und auch noch seine Finger beim dem momentan vielerorts hochgelobten Label below mit im Spiel hat. Zusätzlich ist er seit 2004 Resident auf dem Housefloor vom Cocoon Club in Frankfurt.

VERA ist im Freebase sowieso auch gerngesehener Stammgast. Ganz zu schweigen von ihrer DJ- Karriere, die wohl noch nie so erfolgreich war, wie in letzter Zeit.

Ihre Resideny im berühmten Robert Johnson spricht für sich, neben ihren unzähligen Gigs wie im Monza Ibiza, DC 10 oder Auftritten in der Londoner T-Bar, The End oder The Key. Auch weltweit ist sie viel unterwegs und wurde zu einem gefragten Nachwuchs- DJ. Daneben hat sie noch Zeit gefunden ihre ersten eigenen Produktionen zu veröffentlichen, wie auf Moon Harbour, Oslo, Loveletters oder ihr neuestes Release auf Cargo Edition. Ihre Sets bewegen sich zwischen den Koordinaten von House und Techno, zwischen stimmungsvollen Deephouse und pumpenden Chicago-Tracks, hypnotischen Minimal- Klängen und euphorischen Techno-Platten. Alles verknüpft sie zu einem bunten Soundteppich, der sich hervorragend zum Tanzen eignet.
